DENBY POTTERY ARABESQUE Arabesque was first produced by Denby Pottery in the early 1960's. It was originally called "Samarkand" but when a British competitor introduced a pattern with that name, Denby came up with the name "Arabesque". (I believe that some of it was marketed in the USA under the name "Samarkand"). Gill Pemberton firstly designed it as a small set of gift ware but the range was extended to eventually include a very wide range of dinner, tea and coffee ware. Some of the more exotic and much sought after pieces in the range include ice buckets and large circular platters. Arabesque is probably one of the most easily recognized and highly collected of all Denby's products. However, this range was discontinued in about 1984 and items have now become very difficult to obtain in good condition.
